This was my first Mission of Healing Eyes, and I am so thankful I was able to be a part of it! So many things stand out about the week, but if I had to choose two, they would be the following:
First, as one of the "older generation", I was in AWE of the young volunteers. That so many young people would give of their time to so lovingly and generously help people they don't even know was truly beautiful! They were polite, caring, sensitive, and intelligent. They were an inspiration to me and a gift to the people of Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo.
On the last day of the clinic, when all the patients returned for a final checkup and a question and answer session, one man, Jacinto, had written a poem expressing his gratitude. The poem, with an English translation, follows:
From here with great pleasure I send a greeting to the American doctors, who,
because of their grace and knowledge, allowed me to see.
Ixtapa-Zihautanejo is a very pretty place where the Americans come
to show us their happiness and intelligence.
Dr. Jim Conahan, I offer you my friendship
I have nothing with which to pay you, I only ask that God bless you.
If I were a gardener, for your group of American doctors,
with very beautiful respect, I would very carefully cut you some roses.
Señora Diana de Bravo with pleasure I will sing for you
And I will always remember your team of beautiful doctors.
To my friend Pastor John and his wife Beatriz (Betty)
I ask God to bless you for all that you have done for me.
Here there are many poor people who need your goodness,
Thanks be to God that Dr. Jim Conahan has come to give us our sight.
Dr. Jim Conahan I offer you my thanks,
I ask that God shed his light on you to continue working in the name of Christ Jesus.
