A large traumatic scar left 69-year-old Marta Mendiola Soto blind in her left eye years ago. She progressively lost her vision in her only seeing right eye and became completely blind more than five years ago from her cataract.
She had cataract surgery by our team last week.
Before we left to return to the United States, she quietly came up to the slit lamp to be examined, a small tear streaming down her cheek. I told her that her surgery looked “perfecto!” She smiled and quietly said, “I saw my 5-year-old granddaughter for the first time yesterday.”
She raised her hands in the air saying, “¡Alabado sea Dios!” (“Praise God!”)
At that moment, we realized and prayed:
“Thank you, Jesus, for opening the eyes of our hearts and letting us see You.”Our team completed 127 vision-restoring cataract surgeries last week at our mission site in Zihuatanejo, Mexico — all thanks to your support, prayers, and love.
